Israel’s attack on the agricultural sector in Gaza began soon after it occupied the area in 1967. It deliberately destroyed the citrus industry, and in the 1990s international donors funded cash crops. Farmers shifted to producing for an international market, which proved disastrous when Israel imposed a blockade. Settlers were evacuated from the Gaza Strip in 2005, and this made widespread bombing of the Gaza Strip possible. Beginning in 2008, Israel’s repeated bombardment of the area has resulted in devastation of the farmland. Remediation of the soil, which could take decades to complete, has not even started.
